Gareth Southgate unveiled his provisional England squad for Euro 2024 this afternoon, and Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest does not make the cut.
The Reds attacker was always going to be a long chance given that he has never been called up to the senior England group previously.
However, with numerous elite players’ form in doubt, Forest fans believed Gibbs-White had a good chance of getting the nod.
Southgate has been quite harsh on his regular players ahead of the tournament this summer.
Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Ben Chilwell, and Kalvin Phillips have all been excluded from Southgate’s plans.
The lack of Gibbs-White’s first call-up has had Forest fans talking, and they’ve been reacting on social media.
After England’s announcement of their Euro 2024 squad, Nottingham Forest fans agree that their top player
Gibbs-White, is extremely unlucky.
He’s had 10 assists this season and five goals of his own as he kicked on in 2023/24.
Although he has not previously been called up by England, he has scored more goals than James Maddison, who has made the squad.
Furthermore, the 24-year-old came up through England’s under-21 levels, so Southgate is familiar with Gibbs-White.
There is an argument that playing in the same position as Phil Foden will not benefit the Forest player, but it will sting a little.
Fans do not appear to be happy, and they have leaped to Gibbs-White’s defense.
One fan claimed James Maddison had 13 goal contributions for a team that qualified for the Europa League.
“Morgan Gibbs-White scored 15 goals for a relegation-threatened team.
“I wonder who Gareth Southgate has chosen for Euro 2024.
“Beyond a joke now…”
Another fan commented: “What a shame. “He deserved to be in after a fantastic personal season with Forest.”
Another replied, “Find it insane that Maddison has gone over Morgan Gibbs-White.”
Another fan was outraged, adding, “Also, Morgan Gibbs-White has been left out, which is a real shock. “He’s been fantastic this year.”
Finally, someone stated, “They will regret that decision.”
Gibbs-White can consider himself exceedingly unlucky not to be included in the 33-man preliminary squad.
This season, he is sixth in the Premier League in terms of opportunities created, surpassing Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and James Maddison.
Still, the teenager now has the opportunity to rest and recover ahead of the 2024/25 season.
Forest fans will be hoping Gibbs-White is still part of the squad when that time comes…
