Phil Hay has alleged that Daniel Farke may have been “bluffing” regarding Patrick Bamford’s injury before of Leeds United’s playoff game against Norwich.
Farke declared the Whites striker out of both legs of the semi-final due to a patella tendon issue, despite the fact that the first injury was regarded as a bruise and was not considered serious.
However, during an appearance on the Square Ball podcast (16 May), Hay was questioned if Farke was bluffing to surprise Norwich ahead of the second leg, and the Athletic journalist admitted that the scenario was “weird”.
“He [Farke] didn’t sound like he was bluffing, with Bamford, I don’t think, but everything depends on how quickly he recovers and what happens,” he stated.
“It seemed strange to go from ‘there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong’ to ‘his tendon is damaged’, because you would’ve expected it to be picked up rather fast. It didn’t sound or feel like that was going to be the case, so there is a decision to be made. I do not know.”
Patrick Bamford could make a surprise return for Leeds against Norwich?
While the side performed admirably defensively against Norwich at Carrow Road in the first leg, they lacked a genuine offensive threat both forward and in the penalty area.
Bamford has shortcomings on the field, but his presence in and around certain areas always makes opposing defenders think twice, which can occasionally provide space for his teammates.
So having him back available for the second leg at Elland Road would be a great boost not just to the team’s chances of triumph, but also to the fans who had expected to be without him.
However, given Bamford’s injury history and the fact that Farke rarely takes significant risks with his players’ fitness, it appears doubtful that this would be the case unless there has been a miraculous recovery.
He’s most likely watching from the stands with the rest of the fans, but everyone is hoping that if the squad makes it to Wembley, he’ll be able to play on the pitch.
