Spurs have made some rapid moves this transfer window, signing Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, but their desire for a new midfielder does not appear to be lessening.
According to Gavea News (via The Hard Tackle), Tottenham is interested in signing Wolves’ 22-year-old Brazilian footballer Joao Gomes.
According to the press release, “Tottenham is preparing a substantial proposal to take João Gomes from rival Wolverhampton, with an offer estimated at 30 million pounds.”
Tottenham have previously showed an interest in signing midfielders. Recently, a shortlist of potential candidates has emerged.
According to the report, “This move is a response to the club’s need to reinforce its defensive midfielder position, mainly due to the absence of some players due to injuries and participation in international competitions.”
The injury crisis in North London has been a well-known feature of Tottenham’s season thus far. With Rodrigo Bentancur missing the first few months of the season, James Maddison missing the previous two, and Giovani Lo Celso lately joining the squad, it’s fair to argue that the club could benefit from some more reassurance about their midfield depth.
The necessity for another key player is especially important given the absences of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr during the Africa Cup of Nations.
While Gomes has not been connected with Spurs as frequently as players like as Conor Gallagher, he could still be useful to Ange Postecoglou.
Despite having only 11 Premier League games to his name since joining Wolves in January 2023, Gomes has appeared in practically every match of the 23/24 season, making 18 out of 20.
The Brazilian’s fast rise to a key role at Wolverhampton in the absence of former star Ruben Neves appears to have piqued the interest of a team whose style of play relies on a midfielder who can provide defensive support when full-backs are far up the pitch.
