Peter Schmeichel has revealed how Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher’s antics in the Borussia Dortmund mixed zone put them in trouble on Wednesday night.
Jamie Carragher raised a stir in Borussia Dortmund’s mixed zone following their Champions League win against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
The Liverpool legend fulfilled a lifelong dream by watching Dortmund’s 1-0 victory from the Bundesliga club’s famous ‘Yellow Wall’.
Working in Germany for CBS Sport, the 46-year-old admitted to drinking ‘approximately eight pints’ as he stood in front of the live CBS cameras after the game.
Joining Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel in the studio were pundits Thierry Henry, Micah Richards, and Alessandro Del Piero, as well as presenter Kate Abdo, who were in hysterics as Carragher initiated and conducted a hilarious, impromptu interview with Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.
“Jadon! Jadon Sancho! “Jadon, would you like to join us?” Carragher shouted across the mixed zone when he spotted the England international. “Come on, Jadon.” What a performance. “Get in the middle of us; get in the middle of us.”
When Carragher finished the conversation by asking Sancho whether they might have a few drinks together if Dortmund made it to the Champions League final, the shy winger informed him that he does not drink alcohol.
“I’ll tell you what, the only thing you haven’t done at Borussia Dortmund is go in the Yellow Wall, right?” Carragher spoke to Sancho. “Can you assure the Borussia Dortmund fans that you will go to the Yellow Wall?
“Because I discovered a new family, I’ve made new pals. I mean, they bought me pints of lager throughout the night. Listen, mate; you’d adore it. Honestly, Jadon, you’d enjoy it.
“Jadon, Jadon, me and you, Jadon, Jadon, if you make it to the final, can we get some pints together? You don’t drink?! “Oh come on!”
While such confrontations provided for entertaining content, Carragher’s impassioned antics did not appear to go over well in the Dortmund mixed zone.
Schmeichel would later tell that the former Reds favourite was unwittingly responsible for PSG boss Luis Enrique stepping out of a scheduled interview with CBS. Carragher’s presence also elicited strong warnings from both the Dortmund press officer and UEFA authorities.
“We have been warned to remain quiet,” Schmeichel told a stunned Carragher, who replied, “Are we being too loud? “Are we being too loud in here or in the studio?”
Schmeichel laughed as he told the former defender, “No, in here.” “Whatever you say will be broadcast in every interview worldwide.”
Carragher added, “We’re in a mixed zone here. We are so loud that everyone is staring at us and telling us to quiet up! But let’s just keep going.
“In all seriousness, he’s in the sin bin,” Schmeichel subsequently admitted. “Honestly, he’s in the sin bin. He’s upsetting everyone here. First and foremost, we were meant to have Luis Enrique.
“And he walked in and said, ‘hi’, before leaving since Jamie was wearing a Dortmund scarf. Then, because we brought Jadon Sancho in, the Dortmund press officer became upset with us because he was not on the list. We’ve been really bad. And I hope the content was decent.
Schmeichel would also joke about how Carragher had ‘ruined’ his own relationship with UEFA as CBS attempted to return to the studio.
“Listen, we’re being told to wrap this up because we’re taking your airtime away,” Carragher went on to say. “We are far more entertaining on the road than you. But you need more airtime.”
Schmeichel went on to say, “I’ve been working for four years to get a good relationship with every UEFA person here.”
“And that’s in the bin,” Carragher said. “That’s in the bin!”
“And that’s all gone now,” Schmeichel added. “They are all standing behind the camera, ordering us to keep quiet. So this guy (Carragher) comes on the road once, drinks eight beers, and ruins your relationship!”
