Leicester City’s players and fans couldn’t help but mock Leeds United after the club won the Championship. Enzo Maresca’s team strolled to a 3-0 victory over Preston North End Friday night, leaving the Whites and Ipswich Town to compete for the second automatic promotion slot.
United lead the Tractor Boys on goal difference, but if Kieran McKenna’s squad wins tonight’s game against Coventry City, they will pass them. It appears like the Whites will have to settle for the play-offs in order to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.
A little more than two months ago, United rallied from a goal down to defeat the Foxes 3-1 at Elland Road, closing the deficit to just six points over the top. Daniel Farke’s squad appeared to have blown the title battle wide open, as United fans celebrated with ‘I Predict A Riot’ by Leeds-based rock band Kaiser Chiefs at the final whistle.
Leicester’s travelling fans remembered the moment and sung ‘I predict the play-offs’ at Deepdale after their title victory. The parody of United continued in City’s dressing room, with a video circulating showing Jamie Vardy, Harry Winks, and others singing ‘I anticipate a riot’ while celebrating. Vardy, a former England striker, rolled back the years, scoring once in each half to bring his season total to 20 goals in all competitions.
There is concern over the 37-year-old’s long-term prospects. His contract will expire at the end of the season.
City manager Maresca: “Jamie Vardy represents Leicester. Jamie Vardy has always scored goals, and he will continue to do so even at the age of 40 or 45.
“Goalscoring is in his blood. We are extremely fortunate that he is our player.
“Now we complete the season; we have a game on Saturday, and then we sit. But if I can make up my mind, I believe he will stay.
