Ally McCoist has weighed in on whether Leeds United can still finish second after tonight’s match between Ipswich Town and Coventry City.
Following the weekend’s events, Daniel Farke’s side is still in second place, but only by the skin of their teeth after Leeds lost 4-0 to QPR on Friday night. A poor result in a game that Leeds should have won.
It gave Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich the opportunity to capitalize on Saturday, and they nearly did. Hull, led by Liam Rosenior, held The Tractor Boys to a 3-3 draw, with the latter equalising in the 87th minute.
The results keep Leeds in second place, although Ipswich have a game in hand, which will be played on Tuesday night when they travel to Coventry. Ipswich must avoid losing to move ahead of Leeds before the last weekend.
A loss for Ipswich keeps both at 90 points, and the pendulum swings back in Leeds’ favor. Leeds would move up if they won at Elland Road this weekend, regardless of Ipswich’s outcome against Huddersfield.
Ipswich are winless in four games and have only three points from a potential 12. McKenna’s squad has every danger of losing tonight to a good Coventry side that will be playing without pressure.
Ally McCoist told TalkSPORT (30/04, 6.15AM) that he believes Ipswich will finish ahead of Leeds in second position, and that the Tractor Boys will win at least one point against Coventry tonight.
He also lauded McKenna’s work in the last two years. Here is what the great Scotsman stated.
Ally McCoist on Leeds’ chances of finishing second above Ipswich.
“I don’t care what people say. Kieran McKenna’s performance at Ipswich is among the best of the last two years. I honestly think they’ll get it. I think they’ll make it across the line.
“A great feat, and to execute it in the manner they do. Ipswich is a wonderful watch. I believe they will get the four points, and at least one of them tonight,” McCoist said.
Ipswich could be without former Leeds left-back Leif Davis on Tuesday night, a major setback for McKenna’s side after he went out in the 82nd minute of Saturday’s stalemate with Hull.
On Tuesday night, Ipswich could feel the absence of Leif Davis.
Davis has been brilliant this season, scoring twice and assisting McKenna’s team with 21 goals thanks to his excellent set-pieces and crossing. He even had an assist before being injured versus Hull.
The defender has missed only three league games this season. While there isn’t much to go on, Ipswich has only scored one Championship goal in the three games without the left-footed assist machine.
Ipswich has scored 87 goals in the remaining 41 Championship matches with him. He scores more over two goals per game, and his absence against Coventry significantly decreases Ipswich’s scoring threat. All eyes are on tonight.
