Liverpool can add a proven Premier League goal scorer this summer.
Darwin Nunez has been allowed to go under the radar as Jurgen Klopp’s departure takes center stage. However, if Liverpool had a devastating striker like Dominic Solanke at the top of the pitch, they would still be in pole position to win the Premier League.
The Reds must be kicking themselves for allowing the forward leave for Bournemouth for only £19 million in 2019. You can’t image him blazing straight at Jordan Pickford during the Merseyside derby. Or failing to convert one of their 21 shots in the defeat to Crystal Palace.
Solanke has 18 league goals this season, two behind Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer. He could have a lot more if Mo Salah and Luis Diaz were on either side of him.Nunez has 11 goals in 106 shots this season.
A team at the top of the table cannot afford to have a striker who takes ten shots to score one goal. In comparison, Solanke has scored about one goal for every five shots. That’s a similar record to Erling Haaland.
The statistics are quite damning, particularly Nunez’s 27 big-time lost opportunities.
Liverpool spent £64 million on Nunez, who has four years left on his contract. If they sell the Uruguayan this summer, they will struggle to recuperate the majority of their investment.
However, sustaining faith in the 24-year-old may cost them more silverware in the long run.
It was encouraging to see Kai Havertz celebrate goals against his previous team Chelsea.
Players should be encouraged to rejoice every time they score, rather than suppressing their joy for’respect’.
It only gets disrespectful if they act like Emmanuel Adebayor and run the length of the pitch to mock them.
