Portsmouth will return to the Championship next season after a powerful header from former Leeds United player Conor Shaughnessy sealed the League One title this week.

Under Daniel Farke, the Whites are still in with a chance of winning the Championship this season, but they will need to work together to do it.

A second season in the Championship is the dreaded scenario that could occur if the club does not finish in the top two by May, when they already have one new opponent confirmed.

Portsmouth confirmed promotion back to the Championship.

Portsmouth’s promotion was announced on Tuesday night, bringing one new club into the Championship for next season.

A win at home to Barnsley also won the league title for the third-division club, ending their 12-year absence from the second tier.

If Leeds fail to be promoted back to the Premier League, they will face Pompey for the first time since the 2011/12 season, just before Neil Warnock signed Luke Varney, Jason Pearce, David Norris, and Jamie Ashdown from the financially troubled club.

Conor Shaughnessy might be back at Elland Road during the process.

Conor Shaughnessy, a familiar name among Leeds fans, earned the league title for Portsmouth by scoring a superb header to cap a thrilling comeback at 3-2.

Making his debut under Thomas Christiansen, he showed promise until falling out of favour in 2017/18 and being released by Marcelo Bielsa in 2021.

After spending time in the third division with Rochdale and Burton Albion, he joined Pompey as a relatively unknown recruit at the start of the season, but he quickly became a valuable asset and was chosen to the Team of the Season.

With Championship football beckoning for Shaughnessy and Pompey, an Elland Road homecoming is possible if Farke’s side suffers a setback in the final few games.
