Leeds United face Sunderland in the Championship this evening in their effort to go back to winning ways.
Former White Jon Newsome believes Coventry City may have created a blueprint for beating Leeds United. Leeds’ 15-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday when the Sky Blues prevailed 2-1, handing Daniel Farke’s team their first league defeat of the year.
That defeat was enough to knock the Whites out of the top two, and with only five games remaining in the Championship promotion race, the pressure is increasing. Leeds finished second best at the CBS Arena, and they will be leaving the West Midlands with a few bruises after Mark Robins’ team put on a physically demanding effort.
Coventry made their presence known and were rewarded for it, as did Huddersfield Town’s 10-man squad, who earned a point against the Whites at the beginning of March. The same can be said for a number of other clubs that have been aggressive with Leeds this season; while such an approach hasn’t always resulted in points, Newsome believes it has been a weakness for the Whites.
“There is a bit of a theme there,” Newsome said BBC Radio Leeds when asked why Leeds struggled against Coventry.

“Huddersfield away was just a few weeks ago; they were really physical, they stuck their foot in, they were in your face, and we struggled to break them down and only got a point.
“It’s part of the game that we probably need to have a look at because sides will pick up on it.”
Leeds have the opportunity to win again this evening when they face Sunderland at Elland Road, and at this time in the promotion race, nothing less than three points would suffice for Farke’s side, who also play Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
