Dan James put a rough few weeks behind him by scoring from close within his own half for Leeds United on Monday night, securing a late 3-1 victory over Hull City at Elland Road.
During the international break, 26-year-old James scored in Wales’ victory over Estoia after becoming a father for the second time – but delight quickly changed to misery as Wales was eliminated by Poland.
A clash in the Euro 2024 play-off final went to penalties, with Jamers missing the only spot kick in the shootout. His country was knocked out. However, on Monday night, he scored his 13th of the season.
It follows a dismal night for Leeds, in which Fabio Carvalho cancelled out Sam Byram’s opening after Summerville went past players and had a shot saved. Summerville is back to his best.
Dan James scored Leeds’ 13th goal of the season from 45 yards.
It comes after scoring a stunning goal against Watford in a 2-2 draw, prompting Watford manager Tom Cleverley to call him the finest player in the Championship. Then he earned a late penalty against Hull.
Instead of allowing designated penalty taker Joel Piroe to take it, Summerville grabbed the ball away from him, justifying his decision to pull rank. He sent Ryan Allsopp the wrong way, and the ball went into the net.
During his post-match interview with LUTV, winger James praised Summerville. He thought the Dutch star was outstanding against Watford, pulling Leeds through the game against Hull.
“Cree was incredible the other night.” He dragged us through it, and he has done it again tonight. To get the penalty, James told LUTV, “Step up and send the keeper down the middle. Credit to him.”
Dan James brands the Leeds man. Crysencio Summerville is incredible.
Summerville has gone six Championship games without scoring or providing an assist for Leeds. Leeds need the Dutchman to perform at his peak. Her performance over the last two games has been nothing short of outstanding.
With six Championship matches remaining, Leeds should win at least four of them to have a chance of finishing in the top two. Summerville is the key to accomplishing that right now.
Leeds now have a couple days to rest before facing in-form Coventry City on Saturday lunchtime away. The FA Cup semi-finalists will not be easy opponents. Another major clash.
