Don Goodman believes Leeds United should consider recruiting four new first-team players if they are promoted to the Premier League.
Leeds are second in the Championship after a fantastic run of form this year, taking 34 of the 36 points available.
Daniel Farke’s team currently has a squad full of Premier League-caliber players, but Goodman expects them to strengthen even further.
“It’s a bit like any football club in that if you stand still, you go backwards,” he told MOT.
“If they are to play in the Premier League, which everyone from a Leeds persuasion hopes is the case, they will undoubtedly need to strengthen.”
Wolves are the transfer model to emulate for Leeds United
Goodman went on to say, “They’ll need to strengthen in all departments. We’ve seen the problems of the three promoted clubs this season.
“If those three clubs had been promoted to the Championship this season, they would have struggled to replicate their success from the previous season.
“But there’s no denying that as a promoted team, you have to invest wisely.
“I really like what Wolverhampton Wanderers did, and I don’t simply say that because they’re a team I support.
“When they gained promotion from the Championship, they only added four players, yet those four players went directly into the starting lineup.
“Looking at Burnley, I see so many changes, so many new players. That is part of their problem.
“The formula for a successful team, such as Leeds or Leicester, is to enhance the starting XI by adding four players.
“There’s no question that Leeds will have the purchasing power and appeal. They’re a huge football club.
“Hopefully attracting top quality players here won’t be an issue if they are promoted to the Premier League.”
Leeds United will have a busy transfer window if they are promoted to the Premier League.
There is an argument to be made that Leeds’ current group, or at least the most used 13 or 14 players, is superior to last season’s.
Naturally, some who struggled in the top division performed well against lower-level opponents.
Meanwhile, others have arrived, including Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu, who have surely strengthened the Whites’ defensive line.
Then there’s Archie Gray, who hadn’t even made his senior debut this time last year but is now one of Farke’s leading men.
However, as Goodman points out, Leeds cannot afford to sit still if they do improve. Football is a hard game, and some of the regulars will be replaced.
It should also be noted that a few players are only on loan, thus securing permanent contracts will most likely be top on the agenda.
If the Whites succeed in their goal of returning to the top, it will undoubtedly be a thrilling summer for fans.
