David Prutton predicts Leeds United will beat Millwall and surpass Leicester City in a “incredible” feat.
Leeds have the opportunity to go to the lead if they defeat Millwall by a couple of goals at Elland Road on Sunday (17 March).
It would be a significant feat for the Whites, who were 17 points behind Leicester entering the new year.
Prutton predicted a 2-1 home victory in his Sky Sports column [14 March], saying: “Leeds United can go top of the Championship standings here, which is astonishing given how much they’ve closed the gap on Leicester, who are in FA Cup action this weekend. A victory by two or more goals advances them to the summit.
“But they’re up against a Millwall side that’s resurgent under Neil Harris, having picked up 10 points out of 12. This is always a competitive match, and I believe it will be close. “But Leeds should have enough.”
Millwall in good shape ahead of the Leeds United trip
Leeds had no intention of ever catching Leicester City at the turn of the year. Instead, the goal was to stay in touch with second place.
As a reminder, after their 1-0 loss to West Brom on December 29, United were fourth in the table, nine points behind Ipswich Town in second.
After a nearly flawless start to 2024, they now have the opportunity to go to the top of the standings this weekend.
If spectators inside Elland Road weren’t already excited about the game, the presence of rivals Millwall will only add to the mood.
Millwall have been in very good form recently under Neil Harris, winning three and drawing one of their last four games.
That means they should not be underestimated, but Leeds have demonstrated in 2024 that they are capable of defeating any opponent.
Maintain your current pace this weekend, and automatic promotion will be just around the corner.
