Former Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu will join the Wales national squad next week, having impressed for Leeds United in their promotion campaign this season.
Leeds United’s Ethan Ampadu is “definitely” a future Wales captain. That is the assessment of Wales manager Rob Page, who included the versatile player to his 28-man team for the Euro 2024 play-off semi-final against Finland later this month.
Ampadu has been one of the Whites’ most impressive performances this season. As Daniel Farke’s club seeks an immediate return to the Premier League, the former Chelsea player has performed admirably at both centre-back and central midfield.
His outstanding club performances have not gone unnoticed. Page stated: “He [Ampadu] is currently the captain of Leeds. A large club. He can play in a variety of positions. His attitude is first-rate. He always smiles. He sets a good example both on and off the pitch. He’s a model professional and unquestionably a future captain.”
Ampadu is one of four United players selected for Page’s team. He and winger Dan James are set to win their 50th caps against Finland on March 21. Connor Roberts and Joe Rodon, on loan from Burnley and Tottenham until the end of the season, might also play at Cardiff City Stadium.
Page described Ampadu and James as “incredible lads.” Both are in Leeds together. Living in Sheffield makes it simple for me, which I appreciate. However, they are playing exceptionally well. Ethan is currently playing with Joe [Rodon]. It’s a wonderful partnership.
“They are great lads. For all they’ve given to us and the country, Ethan is still a young man, and perhaps earning his 50th cap is a great accomplishment. They deserve all of the accolades that will come with that accomplishment. I am really grateful to be a part of it when they reach that milestone.”
Page is adamant that Aaron Ramsey’s surprise selection for the Euro 2024 play-offs is not risky. After suffering a knee injury six months ago, the Cardiff City midfielder has not started a match since.
“It’s not been ideal for Aaron, he’s had a few setbacks,” added Page. “Injuries can change after the initial incident. They can change overnight; there may be a variation in diagnosis.
“If there’s a chance of getting him on the squad, I’m going to grab it and name him.
“We’ve had him in and around the squad for the previous two camps, even though he hasn’t played. Having someone of his standing in and around the players is good to us.
“Regardless of what happens over the weekend (when Cardiff face Swansea in the South Wales derby), he’s on the turf this week.
“His rehabilitation to full fitness has gone as planned, and we’ll keep an eye on him every day. If he has the ability to provide us with minutes off the bench, we will use him. “He still has much to offer.”
