Defender to depart Newcastle United this summer, Leeds United and Ipswich Town eyed a winter signing

Leeds United and Ipswich Town were both linked with Newcastle United’s Paul Dummett, who is certain to depart the Magpies this summer, according to reporter Joel Bland.

Leeds United and Ipswich Town were both looking for fresh players in the latter days of the transfer window, and Newcastle United defender Dummett was linked with both Championship clubs.

The Tractor Boys made some preliminary inquiries while examining their defensive alternatives, but finally decided against a late move. Dummett’s condition at St. James’ Park was also reported to have sparked the Whites’ curiosity, although nothing came of it.

Now, with the Welshman falling down the pecking order under Eddie Howe and out of contract this summer, it appears that an exit is imminent.

According to X reporter Joel Bland, Newcastle United will not extend Dummett’s contract after he took a wage cut to stay last year. He has spent his whole career with the Magpies, with the exception of loan spells at Gateshead and St. Mirren.

Exclusive: This will be Paul Dummett’s final season with #NUFC. According to sources close to the player, he will not receive a contract extension in the summer. He took a wage cut to stay at the club for one more season.

    Rekindled summer interest?

It remains to be seen whether Leeds United or Ipswich Town will pursue Dummett again this summer. However, as an experienced and versatile defender who may be available for free, there are far worse possibilities than the Newcastle United player to consider.

It remains to be known which divisions the two Championship promotion candidates will be in next season. Nonetheless, the 32-year-old might be a valuable player for both if they want to strengthen their defensive options for the 2024/25 season.

Dummett has struggled to find game time in the Premier League in recent seasons, so a drop to the second division could provide him with a chance to play more often. He primarily plays as a centre-back, but spent much of his early career as a left-back on Tyneside.
