“Quite upsetting for Leeds”: Gabby Agbonlahor delivers promotion verdict live on talkSPORT

Leeds United are looking for automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season, but the Championship’s top four teams are all in good form.

Leeds’ biggest game of the season so far is a home game against Leicester City on Friday night at Elland Road, with the expectation that a win will go a long way toward making the crown something to seek again.

The two teams immediately below Leeds, Ipswich Town and Southampton, are in close proximity and ready for any slip-up by the Whites.

Championship table as it stands: Leeds hopes to get Leicester within six points.

Leeds’ victory over Plymouth was not the prettiest of displays, but it was nice to witness after previous poor showings resulted in defeats earlier in the season.

When combined with Leicester’s loss at home to Middlesbrough on the same Saturday, as well as Southampton’s midweek defeat at home to Hull City, the top four is beginning to form a tighter group.

Leeds will undoubtedly take that after heading into 2024 with two consecutive defeats, a nine-point deficit to second, and a 17-point deficit to Leicester.

    1 Leicester City 33 25 3 5 43 78
    2 Leeds United 33 21 6 6 35 69
    3 Ipswich Town 33 20 9 4 21 69
    4 Southampton 33 20 7 6 24 67
    5 West Brom 33 16 7 10 10 55
    6 Hull City 33 16 6 11 17 54

Gabby Agbonlahor wants Ipswich to be promoted.

TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor was appraising the promotion race when Ipswich Town’s Conor Chaplin came on their Breakfast Show this morning.
After Chaplin’s portion, Agbonlahor told Alan Brazil the following about the promotion race:
“We neutrals, Alan, want Ipswich to improve.

“Everyone I speak to, they are like ‘yeah I want Ipswich to come up’.”

“They are people’s second team, and image being promoted two years in a row.

“I simply believe it’ll be incredibly upsetting for Leeds, Southampton, and Ipswich, or whoever misses out.

This season’s promotion will come down to the wire.
