He is the key reason for Leeds’ success this season.
After a difficult start in which they won only two of their first seven games, Leeds United are currently second in the Championship and appear to be on track to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, prompting salary increases for several key players.
Leeds march on towards promotion.
Leeds currently appear like the favourites for automatic promotion, thanks in part to Southampton’s defeat at home to Hull City on Tuesday night, and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Last weekend’s 2-0 win at Plymouth made it eight league wins in a row for the West Yorkshire club, with Daniel Farke’s side appearing to improve with each game.
Getting rid of previously problematic players has contributed to the team’s success. The majority of Leeds fans believed they’d seen the last of Wilfred Gnonto after he refused to play in the early stages of the season, but with five goals in his last five games, the Italian has forced his way back into the hearts of the Elland Road faithful.
Gnonto has formed a connection with Crysencio Summerville, a 15-goal sensation, and record signing Georginio Rutter to assist their team score nearly two goals every game. While the talent is undeniable, these performances would not be possible without the man in the dugout, who appears to be about to get a raise.
McAvennie reacts to the newest Leeds contract news.
Former Celtic and West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie told Football Insider that Farke deserves a new contract at Leeds after improving the team’s fortunes.
“Leeds have had a number of good managers in recent years. But Farke has been fantastic for them. He’s got them playing an exciting kind of football, and he’s done an excellent job. “Oh my God, he deserves a new contract.”
With news of a new deal for Farke breaking last week, it is evident that the 49ers want to lock down their manager if they return to the Premier League this season. The 47-year-old, like with several other players, would be in line for a significant pay increase for leading the Whites back to the promised land, with whispers of new contracts circulating for Summerville and Patrick Bamford.
With a 63% victory rate and an amazing two points per game, Leeds appear to be on track to overcome a difficult start to the season and return to the top division. Farke has won the second division with Norwich City twice before, so there’s little doubt he has the pedigree to achieve it again.
As we approach the end of the Championship season, perhaps the promise of a wage increase is just what Farke and his players need to go across the finish line. With thirteen games remaining, including a match against league leaders Leicester, everything is on the line, but Leeds appear to be in a strong position to win.
