The latest Nottingham Forest news focuses on former Reds youngster Arvin Appiah’s transfer to Almeria.
Arvin Appiah’s five-year journey from Nottingham Forest to Almeria has been dubbed a “fiasco”.
The Reds sold the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate to the Spanish club in 2019 for around £8 million. However, the 23-year-old has faced some challenges since then.
Since his transfer, Appiah has been loaned out to Lugo, Tenerife, and Malaga. He is now on a season-long loan at Rotherham United, where he has largely played off the bench.
With the former England Under-19 international struggling to make an impact in the Championship, Spanish publication Diario de Almeria reports that Almeria has recognized that they would lose money if Appiah is eventually released. They describe his signing as “a blot on a list of successes.”
Appiah earned eight senior appearances for Forest after moving up the ranks. He made his League Cup debut as a substitute, scoring in a 3-2 defeat to Burton Albion.
When it became evident that he would be leaving the City Ground, Almeria beat Manchester United to his signature. When the trade was completed, they poked fun at the Premier League heavyweights on social media, writing: “Sorry Man Utd, Arvin Appiah is red and white.” Marca, a Spanish publication, went on to call the toddler a “English pearl”.
According to Diario de Almeria, the club believes their choice to sign Appiah was a “fiasco”. They claim his market value has dropped to around 500,000 euros (£427,000) and label the move as a “ruinous operation”.
Appiah discussed the difficulties of adjusting to Spanish football early on in his Almeria career. He stated, “Championship football is a lot more physical than Spanish football, and you know how demanding the Championship games are. In Spain, I believe things are much more tactical and technical.
“At first, I wasn’t playing, and I was adjusting to the lifestyle, culture, and so on. But when I started playing, they were really friendly, and they appreciated what I offered to the team.”
