Leeds United leapfrogged Southampton into second position in the Championship on Tuesday and are well on their way to automatic promotion – and Tim Sherwood believes they may just take second.
Leeds won seven League games in a row, including a 4-0 victory over Swansea City, and kept their sixth clean sheet. But it was made much better when I learned that Southampton had lost 3-1 to Bristol City on Tuesday.
The Saints have broken their historic unbeaten streak of 25 games, ahead of tonight’s difficult away trip to West Bromwich. Carlos Corberan might benefit Leeds by taking points off Russell Martin’s Saints.
Sherwood was asked about the Championship promotion battle on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, and he believes Leicester have a clear lead. The Foxes are 12 points ahead of Leeds.
He believes Ipswich have slowed down, despite speaking ahead of the club’s superb 4-0 away win over Millwall on Wednesday night. Sherwood, on the other hand, feels Leeds will overtake Southampton for second place.
“There are four teams that are outstanding, the rest are average,” she remarked. “Automatic spots in Ipswich have dwindled. Leeds, with their home ground and fanbase, when they get momentum.
“With their assistance, they will be difficult to stop. Leicester is out of sight. Can Southampton hang in there? I’d definitely go with Leeds at the moment solely because of that 12th guy.”
Tim Sherwood believes Leeds will beat Southampton to Second
Leeds have been in the spotlight this week after surpassing Southampton, with numerous experts discussing the promotion race. Gabby Agbonlahor, maybe unsurprisingly, stated that he would prefer Leeds not to advance.
Simon Jordan is the opposite. Southampton has a key game in hand, and if they win, they will remain one point ahead of Leeds. The momentum, however, appears to be on Daniel Farke’s side right now.
