Jan Aage Fjortoft believes Liverpool will win the race to capture Xabi Alonso this summer.
Many commentators have identified the former Spanish international as the “frontrunner” for the soon-to-be vacant head coaching position at Anfield.
“First of all, if Liverpool is desperate and spends all of their money on Xabi Alonso, I believe they will get him,” the Viaplay writer said on The German Fussball Podcast.
“Having stated that. If there is one man, one coach, who will look at his progress as a coach and analyze the Liverpool job – because it doesn’t matter who comes after Jurgen Klopp, that will be a hell of a place to go – Xabi Alonso will do so.
“It’s safe to say that he’s the lead. He checks all the requirements except for experience. Yes, he has a lengthy history as a player, but make no mistake: coaching Liverpool Football Club is not the same as coaching Bayer Leverkusen, and I say that with all due respect to Leverkusen.”
Bayer Leverkusen presently leads the Bundesliga table by five points following an emphatic 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich.
Liverpool’s lack of Jurgen Klopp has made taking risks unavoidable. When a potential young manager like Xabi Alonso becomes available this summer, our decision-makers should not panic.
Given the significance of the position and the 42-year-old’s history with Liverpool, that is surely a possibility. And wouldn’t we rather embark on a journey with one recognized face who has a stellar track record of cultivating fresh talent than with a whole new entity?
