The 27-year-old is at the centre of a police probe following the incident in the dying minutes of Sunday’s derby win at Parkhad
Vaclav Cerny has broken his silence on his Old Firm water squirting controversy and branded the derby drama “ABSURD”.
The Rangers ace is at the centre of a Police Scotland probe after he celebrated Hamza Igamane’s dramatic late winner at Parkhead on Sunday by spraying water into a section of the home fans behind the away dugout.
Cops are now probing the incident, confirming a report has been received in relation to the incident – and that an investigation into it is currently ongoing.
Celtic also released a statement saying they had “raised concerns regarding members of the away team engaging with Celtic supporters with the relevant authorities.”
Cerny is on loan at Ibrox from German side Wolfsburg and is currently on international duty with the Czech Republic for their World Cup 2026 qualifiers against minnows Faroe Islands and Gibraltar.
And the 27-year-old was quizzed on the incident by media Prague outlet iSport Blesk ahead of that double header and intimated to them that it was unintentional and that it was a combination of the euphoria and the fans being in close proximity.
Cerny was coy when asked about and it said: “I don’t want to say too much, I can’t. I find it a bit absurd.
“The stands are so close, to have open water… I didn’t even know what was happening at that moment. I just ran. It’s a derby.”
Cerny could still face the beaks for getting involved with supporters under the SFA rules – and could cop a ban of anything from two to eight games.
Hampden chiefs are under pressure from Police to make sure players don’t get involved with punters in the white hot Old Firm environment.
Cerny is likely to be in action when the Czechs face the Faroes on Saturday before travelling to Gibraltar on Tuesday with two favourable ties to open their qualifying campaign.
He’ll then be back at Ibrox when Barry Ferguson’s team face Dundee at Dens and Hibs at home before their Europa League quarter-final first leg with Athletic Bilbao on April 10.
