Newcastle United has five players out on loan this season.
Newcastle United’s loan players had a productive weekend. While their original team suffered a stunning FA Cup exit, the stars at other clubs fared better.
Newcastle’s squad remains depleted following a transfer window in which several players left – Miguel Almiron’s move to Atlanta United was permanent – and only a couple of teenagers arrived to improve the Academy numbers. They included Kyle Fitzgerald, who scored for the U18s over the weekend.
The Magpies have five players on loan, including Lloyd Kelly, whose temporary move to Juventus will become permanent in the summer if certain conditions are met. We take a look at how they all performed.
Lloyd Kelly
The defender struggled with his transition to Serie A. However, he has begun to settle into new surroundings and has been starting for Juventus in the heart of defence despite an injury crisis at the Old Lady.
Kelly again played 90 minutes for Juventus on Monday night, keeping a clean sheet against Verona. It was a welcome win for the Turin side after they were knocked out of the Coppa Italia and Champions League, and it propelled them back into the top four. Kelly received a yellow card on 62 minutes but was largely unaffected as Juventus scored twice late on to leapfrog Lazio and go six points clear of leaders Inter.
Juve are obligated to sign Kelly for £12 million plus a possible £5.4 million in add-ons if they qualify for any European tournament this season. The Italian club paid a £3 million loan fee to sign him from Newcastle during the winter transfer window.
Joe White
The Carlisle-born midfielder started as MK Dons lost 1-0 to Colchester in League Two. Scott Lindsey, the Dons’ manager, was terminated following the game. Lindsey had only one point in the previous six games as the team fell to 17th place.
White will now work with his third boss this season. Lindsey had taken over as manager from former Gateshead boss and Newcastle defender Mike Williamson.
White played 66 minutes against Colchester before being replaced. The attacking player had a promising start to his time with the club, but has struggled for goals and assists in recent weeks.
Alex Murphy
The Irish defender played the first hour for Bolton Wanderers, helping them keep a clean sheet as they earned a valuable point against League One high-fliers Wrexham. Murphy, who played left-back, was cautious throughout the game and battled with possession.
However, his defensive performance was superb, allowing Bolton to earn an important point.
Isaac Hayden
Hayden, Newcastle’s forgotten man, still has another year on his contract after this season, having signed a lucrative six-year deal in 2020. His playing time at the Magpies has been limited, as he hasn’t kicked a ball for the first team since a December 2021 match against Manchester City.
His move to Portsmouth in January went well. Hayden has moved into the heart of midfield, playing a holding role and frequently dropping in between the centre halves to gain possession and provide extra security.
Pompey manager John Mousinho stated, “I absolutely believe Isaac does a very consistent job in the middle of the park. You get the best of both worlds: defensive solidity and him ticking over with the ball.”
Hayden played 81 minutes against Championship strugglers Luton Town on Saturday, his tenth appearance for the club. Portsmouth lost 1-0 and remain 17th in the league. Former Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie also started but was replaced at halftime.
Harrison Ashby
The 23-year-old defender was an unused substitute in QPR’s 2-1 Championship loss to promotion-chasing Sheffield United on Saturday. Ashby has struggled to find playing time this season since joining QPR in the summer.
