According to insiders, Steven Gerrard would be Rangers’ “dream appointment” to replace Philippe Clement.
On the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that probable new owners 49ers Enterprises are expected to have a voice in appointing a new permanent boss.
Rangers want to take their time making a selection in case currently unavailable options emerge as contenders by the conclusion of the season.
In the meantime, Barry Ferguson has been appointed on an interim basis to allow the leadership to make a more long-term decision.
Gerrard’s previous spell at Ibrox has earned him plenty of respect among the supporters – something Clement struggled to earn during his spell.
Gerrard has emerged as their main target at this early stage because to his close ties with the club, as he was the last manager to win the SPFL title at Ibrox.
This comes after Mick Brown, former Sir Alex Ferguson number two, told Football Insider on February 24 that Gerrard would consider returning to Rangers.

Rangers fired Clement following a 2-0 loss to St Mirren, leaving them 13 points behind Celtic in the SPFL and out of the Scottish Cup.
Gerrard’s earlier tenure at Ibrox won him a lot of respect from the fans, which Clement struggled to achieve during his.
The manager is now out of job after quitting Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent at the end of January, and he would be available without compensation.
However, the Gers hierarchy are keen not to rush into a decision and end up with the wrong man after concerns about the appointments of Clement and Michael Beale in the past.
On February 25, Brown told Football Insider that the 49ers will play a crucial part in hiring the next Rangers manager and that they want their own man in charge.
49ers Enterprises takeover update emerges at Ibrox
Excitement has been building amongst fans after news of 49ers Enterprises’ move to buy Rangers became public – but they have been urged to remain patient for now.
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson told Football Insider that the 49ers’ takeover of Rangers is still in the “very early” stages.
He explained that the Glasgow club have not yet made a takeover disclosure – something they are obligated to do once a concrete bid arrives for the purchase of the club.
The takeover news comes as new chief executive Patrick Stewart undertakes an internal review at Rangers led by New York consultants Sportsology Group.
