Latest Liverpool news and rumors as Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique makes a point about the Reds and Arne Slot ahead of their Champions League last-16 match.
Not only did Liverpool win impressively on Wednesday night, but other teams also did so ahead of the Champions League return next week. The Reds beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Premier League, extending their advantage over Arsenal to 13 points.
Liverpool’s triumph over the Magpies was their final game before facing Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last 16. Arne Slot and his teammates will fly to Paris for the first leg on March 5 before returning to Liverpool a week later.
PSG were also in action on Wednesday night, facing Stade Briochin in the Coupe de France quarterfinal. Luis Enrique’s team defeated the French fourth-tier club 7-0, due to a hat-trick from Goncalo Ramos and goals from Joao Neves, Desire Doue, Senny Mayulu, and Ousmane Dembele.
The victory for PSG comes after the Ligue 1 club defeated Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the Champions League play-off round last week. Following the victory over Briochin, Enrique explained why he is confident in his team’s chances of playing Liverpool in Europe next week.
“Well, if you look at Liverpool, which is theoretically in a transition year, they have a top-level coach [Slot] and remain one of the best teams in Europe,” Enrique told reporters on Wednesday, as reported by Sports Illustrated.
“Their results show it: they’re at the top of the table. But I believe we will compete and make it difficult for them. The purpose is to fight to the end.”
Liverpool will be off this weekend, but PSG will be playing. Enrique and his teammates will return to Ligue 1 action on Saturday against Lille, having scored 17 goals in their last three matches across all competitions.
