Leeds United have had their fair share of managers, and what a diverse group they have been.
Daniel Farke is the current manager at Leeds United. The seasoned Championship boss is aiming for his third second-tier crown, having previously won two with Norwich City.
His squad is currently well on pace. Despite dropping to second position in the Championship table over the weekend when Sheffield United defeated Luton Town, Leeds can put seven points between themselves and Burnley in third if they win fourth-place Sunderland on Monday night.
Farke could soon become the first manager since Marcelo Bielsa in 2020 to lead Leeds United to promotion. Jesse Marsh, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce have all been in charge since Bielsa’s departure over three years ago today.
Leeds have had 17 different permanent managers since 2010. There have been some questionable appointments throughout the years, but Garry Monk had a fair record.
Garry Monk departs Cambridge United after a disastrous year in charge
Monk, 45, has certainly been around the block. He has previously managed Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, Sheffield Wednesday, and, most recently, Cambridge United, which he took over in March 2024 after a four-year absence from managing.
Monk’s sole season as manager of Elland Road was in the 2016/17 Championship. Leeds were on track for a top six finish before a poor run of form in the final weeks of the season cost them sixth place on the last day of the season.
Monk won 25 of 53 games as Leeds manager (47.17%, very little less than Bielsa’s 47.65%). However, Monk won only nine of his 49 games as manager of Cambridge (18.37%), and he left the League One team after just one year.
Cambridge have won only one of their previous 14 games in all competitions and are at the bottom of the League One standings, five points behind.
Daniel Farke’s Leeds United record versus Marcelo Bielsa’s.
Bielsa managed Leeds United for 170 games in total, winning 80 and cementing his place in club history after the team’s elevation to the Premier League in 2020.
Farke already has one failed promotion on his Leeds CV, but he still has a solid track record. He has won 52 of his 90 games as manager (57.78%, compared to 41.83% in his four years at Norwich City).
Leeds face promotion rivals Sunderland on Monday night. A win for Leeds might put them in pole position for automatic promotion, whilst defeat would throw the promotion race wide open.
