Rangers may have to pay Dundee about £400,000 in compensation after signing Lyall Cameron on a pre-contract, according to the Daily Record.
The Record stated on February 3 that after the Gers announced Cameron’s signing till the end of the season when his Dundee contract ends, the two clubs will try to agree on a cost of around £400,000.
If a sum cannot be agreed upon for the 22-year-old, his transfer will proceed to tribunal, but Dundee’s compensation claims are undermined by the fact that their academy lacks ‘elite’ designation.
Cameron’s departure would have resulted in the Dees receiving less than £400,000, but if they can reach an agreement with the Light Blues, which might include add-ons and bonuses, a tribunal may be avoided.
Rangers set to make the most of Lyall Cameron’s transfer.
If the Light Blues had planned to move quickly and secure a deal to bring Cameron to Ibrox, Dundee could have gotten considerably more than £400,000 from them.
However, by postponing his move west until the summer, when he is officially a free agent, the Ibrox hierarchy could save upwards of six figures, unless they are heavily penalized by a tribunal.
The Gers went through a similar procedure when they signed Connor Barron, also 22 at the time, on a free transfer from Aberdeen last summer, and he’s shown to be a valuable addition.
Barron’s performances for Philippe Clement’s team this season have demonstrated that the Bears can gain value from domestic transfers throughout the Premiership, and they will hope Cameron can have a similar influence.
It remains to be seen whether the Belgian can add to his team before the winter window closes, but once summer arrives, Cameron will be ready to make his imprint at Ibrox.
