Rangers have attempted to persuade Yorbe Vertessen to join them from Union Berlin, according to Pieter-Jan Calcoen.
The Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad claimed on Monday (3 February) morning that Vertessen is likely to join Red Bull Salzburg on a permanent basis, despite interest from several other clubs.
Calcoen, who writes for the Flemish daily, has revealed on his personal X account that the Light Blues had launched a last-ditch attempt to hijack the transaction.
The journalist, however, added that Philippe Clement’s team will fail unless they launch a “huge charm offensive”.
Yorbe Vertessen shocks the Rangers
Few would have anticipated Rangers to make a move to recruit a new striker with just hours until the winter transfer window closes.
According to Ibrox News, Nils Koppen is keeping track on possible targets in and from Belgium.
Vertessen, a 12-time Belgian Under-21 international, is understandably on the Glasgow giants’ attention.
The 24-year-old has been extensively linked with a move away from Union Berlin during the current transfer window, having played only 714 minutes in the Bundesliga this season.
He appeared to be on his way to Werder Bremen at one point, but it appears that Red Bull Salzburg is now his destination.
Rangers’ interest in Vertessen may be fueled by the uncertainty surrounding Cyriel Dessers’ future at Ibrox.
Even on the final day of the transfer window (3 February), the Nigeria international is still connected with a move away from Govan, with Italian clubs reportedly keen [La Gazzetta dello Sport].
