Nottingham Forest have been linked with a number of players this month, with fans eagerly anticipating the first January arrival to Trentside.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has been looking for an attacker for the past month. A number of tentative links have been made with things likely to be ramped up as the window draws to a close.
Matheus Cunha has been associated to Forest. The Wolves striker is stalling over a new contract and that has opened the door to a number of clubs who like the look of the Brazilian.
Forest also like Mathys Tel. The Bayern Munich striker has now made a decision to leave the Bundesliga giants and that has alerted most Premier League outfits this month.
Another player on Forest’s radar is Yoane Wissa. The Brentford striker is unlikely to move this month, but one of the industry’s best transfer journalists has provided an update.
David Ornstein delivers Yoane Wissa updates amid Forest links
Jamie Redknapp thinks Wissa is worth £40 million. Brentford might value him even higher than that given that time is running out for the Bees to get an adequate replacement in for him this window.
Ornstein hasn’t completely ruled out some movement though. He’s now been asked for an update on the Wissa update on the newest TalkSPORT show and Forest might have some hope of landing the 28-year-old.
He said: “Look, in a perfect world, Brentford would keep Wissa because he’s delivering for them, which is important; he’s 28 and has a couple of years left on his contract. They’re cunning foxes at the Gtech, and they’ll set a price on his head that must be met or he’ll stay.
“Clearly, Forest didn’t meet that with £22 million, their interest remains, will they go higher? Will that entice Brentford? They’re not in a hurry to do it, and they have no financial incentive to do so.
“We talk about Arsenal and Tottenham; would they consider a Wissa? I’m not sure about Arsenal; I don’t think he matches their profile. Will Tottenham? He’s a fantastic player, but he’s one to keep an eye on as a potential trade candidate before the deadline.”
Yoane Wissa stats 2024-25
Wissa has been in excellent form since signing for Brentford for £8 million immediately after the club’s promotion. More lately, he has smoothly filled the vacuum created by Ivan Toney, and losing him does not appear to be an option for the Bees during this window.
Wissa is a perfect example of Brentford’s transfer philosophy. They frequently recruit players from lower-level European divisions and transform them into multimillion-dollar investments when it comes time to sell them.
Forest would love to host Wissa at the City Grounds. Although he is 28, this most likely indicates that he is in his prime, and there will be no settling in time.
Wissa appears to be an improbable signing for Forest this January. However, if the Reds can secure European football ahead of Brentford, he may be worth revisiting in the summer.
