Despite the points gap in the league standings, Leeds United loanee Leo Hjelde feels Sunderland’s squad is just as skilled as his old side’s.
The defender joined Wearside in the final week of the January transfer window, after spending two and a half years at United. The Norwegian made only one Championship appearance under Daniel Farke in the first half of the season and opted to depart Elland Road in search of more consistent playing time.
Hjelde matched that total last weekend when he made his Sunderland debut in his first game under Michael Beale, impressing in a 1-1 draw with local rivals Middlesbrough. The versatile defender started at left back but also played center back.
Despite his brief time with Sunderland, Hjelde feels the Black Cats have a roster that is on par with Leeds’ automatic promotion contenders. The 20-year-old said: “When you compare the Sunderland group to the one at Leeds, I don’t think there’s much of a difference in terms of talent. The squad’s age is arguably the most significant difference.
“We probably do not have as much experience here. However, the boys’ quality is undeniably high. It’s incredible, and it’s why the club has a policy of signing young, dynamic players. The team is excellent, and I’m really delighted with what I’ve found.”
Despite what the Championship standings may indicate, the Norwegian under-21 international believes the Sunderland squad is just as strong as the Whites’, a group that Sunderland will be hoping can help them secure a play-off berth for the second consecutive season. The Black Cats are currently seventh in the Championship, one point out of the playoff spots.
