Liverpool travels to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Nottingham Forest have signed goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey, just hours before their top-of-the-table Premier League meeting with Liverpool. The Reds will head to the City Ground on Tuesday night hoping to increase their six-point lead over second-placed Forest.
But, only hours before the encounter in the East Midlands, Forest revealed that Hennessey had rejoined the club on a short-term contract until the end of the season. The 37-year-old former Wales international joined with the club in 2022, but left when his contract expired last summer.
He has remained at the club’s training facility in the months afterward. In his pre-match press conference on Monday, Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo said: “Unfortunately, Wayne had a major injury at the conclusion of last season, which was a difficult time for everyone on the training field.
“But he’s improved, and he’s now an important member of our team, particularly in the goalkeeping community, which is small.
“He has signed his contract, and it is a pleasure to have him around. His education, experience, and approach to his work make him an invaluable asset.”
Forest’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in September ensures they remain the only team to defeat Arne Slot’s side in the Premier League this season. And, when asked about the task Forest will present on Tuesday, Slot replied, “I think they already demonstrated in retrospect how excellent of a squad they are.
“Prior to that game, I believe they had two ties and one win. In general, I believe it is unusual for Liverpool to lose at home.
“I think at the time, I also saw that Virgil [van Dijk] had played 100 games for Liverpool and only lost twice at Anfield.” So, as you might imagine, losing on that particular day was difficult for me.
“Looking back and seeing where they are in the league, it’s not as surprising a result as I thought it was at the time. They had a great game plan. [They] switched the wingers who usually played and brought them in at the end, and they made a difference.
“However, I expect their wingers, who have performed admirably, to start tomorrow. That’s something he adjusted back then, and it worked extremely well for them in that game.”
