They claim that the best zsides have been constructed by recruiting the best of the rest in Scottish football.
Over the years, Rangers teams that have won championships have often been stacked with the greatest Scottish talent plucked from the Scottish Premier League.
However, in recent seasons, Rangers have attempted to add value to their roster elsewhere, missing out on a number of outstanding young prospects in the country.
The less said about Lewis Ferguson, the better.
Philippe Clement has acknowledged one of the Premier League’s top stars, with Nils Koppen promising to sign one Scottish-based player per season between the first team and academy.
Philippe Clement hails Lyall.
Lyall Cameron, an aggressive midfielder for Dundee, is a rising star in the Scottish Premiership. He has been impressive at Dens Park this season.
Rangers have been pushed by the likes of Andy Halliday to consider Cameron for a transfer, given his remarkable return of eight goals and seven assists in all competitions.
Lyall Cameron’s outstanding performances this season have piqued the interest of Rangers fans as well, with the Dundee midfielder making 100 appearances and turning heads throughout the country.
With Rangers poised to face Dundee in the Scottish Premiership, Philippe Clement praised Lyall Cameron’s performance.
It comes after the 22-year-old Dundee midfielder’s contract expired in the summer, and Rangers were mocked for failing to sign former colleague Luke McCowan.
The Rangers manager is under pressure to improve the club’s poor away record and speaks highly of Tony Docherty’s Dundee team.
“I have a lot of respect for Tony Docherty,” Clement stated during a pre-match press conference. “His team is always incredibly competitive; they make it really difficult for opponents.
“They are really adept at transitioning, and they have a lot of good transition players. Three front players are particularly effective in this regard.
“Lyle Cameron is also a very talented midfielder, a creative midfielder with decisive action on the final ball and a nice solid basis behind him.
“So, we know it’s going to be a game where we have to break over the wall and make sure we don’t run throughout the transitions.
“We need to take lessons out of the Hibs game to be better, to win those duels more.”
Dundee midfielder’s Rangers ‘wish’
Philippe Clement’s statements are the first public confirmation that the Rangers’ backroom staff is aware of Lyall Cameron.
Given that the Dundee talent is out of contract in the summer, and Rangers’ intent on hunting for more homegrown players, this appears to be a tap-in for Nils Koppen and co.
If that wasn’t enough to persuade the Rangers leadership, Lyall Cameron admitted in September that he ‘wishes he could play at Ibrox’.
It comes after the midfielder discussed Dundee’s loss of Luke McCowan in the summer, when the attacking midfielder joined Old Firm rivals Celtic.
“It is hard, to be honest, because I think Luke and I built a really good relationship in the middle of the pitch,” Cameron told the crowd.
“We understood where each other was, and he came up with significant moments, as did I.
“So I believe we just got along well and knew what the other person was going to do.
“Obviously, losing him at that point of the season was difficult, but I believe we brought in some outstanding guys.
“Hopefully, once they find their feet on the club and understand the league, they will perform well.
“We’ve brought in a number of boys who haven’t previously played in this level. You do need Premiership experience. I’ve been playing here for a few years now.
“I know I’m only 21, but I’m one of the more seasoned members of the team.
“I believe we will be fine once everyone finds their footing and begins to understand one another.
“I’m quite confident in my ability, and I believe I could play with a larger team.
“Obviously, when you visit places like Ibrox, you hope you could move to a team like this.
“Obviously, it would be fantastic for your career. So hopefully, one day, I will be able to continue doing it.”
