Rangers can’t complain about losing a penalty in the thrilling draw against Hibernian, despite Euan Booth Robertson’s belief that VAR made a mistake, Keith Hackett has claimed.
Despite Hamza Igamane’s outstanding hat-trick on Sunday (5 January), the Gers twice gave up a lead in a tense 3-3 draw at Easter Road.
In an incident-filled game, Philippe Clement was angry when Ianis Hagi surrendered a penalty for a foul on Josh Campbell, which Martin Boyle converted to tie the game at two.
Robertson, who previously worked for the Scotland Herald and Daily Record but now works for Transfermarkt, expressed his disappointment with the decision on X.
He commented, “I’m surprised so little has been reported about Hibernian’s penalty against Rangers. It’s never a penalty and should be a free kick for Rangers.
“Hagi wins the sprint to the ball, crosses his body to play with his left foot, and Campbell flies into the back of his left leg. I have no idea why VAR didn’t interfere. “Clear error.”
However, when Ibrox News showed him film of the incident and Robertson’s reaction, Hackett stated unequivocally that it was a penalty.
He responded, “He [Robertson] is incorrect because he has failed to perceive that the penalty was awarded for the upper body foul committed by Hagi, who barges into his opponent.
“A clear penalty kick.”
Ianis Hagi engaged in Rangers flashpoint vs Hibernian.
Rangers had been coasting courtesy to Igamane’s two goals inside 20 minutes at Easter Road, but they were the architects of their own demise against David Gray’s side.
Hagi was a little reckless with his challenge, and it created an excellent opportunity for Hibs to regain their footing after a difficult start.
What should frustrate Clement more than the penalty being awarded is the fact his side managed to get back ahead through Igamane and still transpire to not with the game.
Regardless of where you stand on the penalty call, the truth of the matter is Rangers lost this game because of poor game management.
