Manchester United will be without a number of important players ahead of their trip to Liverpool this Sunday.
Manchester United will be helped by the return of Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte from suspension against Liverpool, but Ruben Amorim could still be without five players at Anfield. The Portuguese acknowledged during his pre-match press conference that out-of-favour Marcus Rashford is doubtful for the trip to Merseyside due to illness.
“It’s the same situation but, at the moment, he’s ill,” Amorim told me. “I believe he is going to be out this week. He isn’t training, so we’ll see.”
Rashford was an unused substitute in United’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday, having been left out of the Red Devils’ matchday squad for the previous four games due to continuous rumors regarding his future.
While the forward is doubtful for the match against Liverpool, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Victor Lindelof will all be missing due to injuries.
Both Mount and Shaw have been hampered by injury at Old Trafford, with it announced last month that both had suffered setbacks after only recently recovering.
Meanwhile, Jonny Evans was absent from United’s squad on Monday night, with youngster Godwill Kukonki selected on the bench. While the cause for his absence remains unknown, the Red Devils website has included the Northern Irishman in their team news round-up ahead of the encounter.
Fernandes will be eligible to play Liverpool, despite receiving his second red card of the season away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was also disqualified against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the season, although it was eventually overturned.
He only had to serve a one-game suspension, as opposed to two, which is often the outcome of a second domestic dismissal of the season.
Ugarte is also back in contention after serving a one-match suspension against Newcastle for collecting five yellow cards in the Premier League.
