With Alphonso Davies’ future still up in the air, Bayern Munich is allegedly interested in Benfica standout and Manchester United target Alvaro Fernandez.
In an attempt to restart their season, United is eager to sign a left-wing-back this month. This position has been problematic all season long, mostly because of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s fitness issues. Diogo Dalot has filled in temporarily, but he is not very skilled and is obviously less productive on that side of the field. The Red Devils have been linked to a number of left-sided full-backs, including Davies, Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Antonee Robinson (Fulham), and of course, Fernandez.
Davies is negotiating a new contract with Bayern, so it’s possible that he may be available on a free agent in the summer.
But it appears that the Bundesliga powerhouses are also preparing backup plans in case they lose the Canada international, who is also being considered by Barcelona and Real Madrid.
If Davies decides to leave the Allianz Arena, Bayern has identified Fernandez, a target for United, as a possible replacement, according to Record Portugal.
The news site reveals that Bayern are keeping close tabs on Fernandez as a potential alternative.
United put a buy-back clause in Fernandez’s contract when they sold him to Benfica in the summer. It is estimated that this buy-back option is worth around £17 million.
Fernandez has a contract with Benfica through 2029.
It is easy to understand why some of the biggest clubs in Europe are interested in Fernandez. The 21-year-old has made 15 Liga Portugal appearances so far this season, scoring twice and dishing out one assist. Fernandez is a modern full-back who thrives in attacking areas and appears to be well-suited to Ruben Amorim’s tactics. He would also be available for a knockdown fee, which makes a swoop even more alluring.
