Sonny Perkins’ contract with Leeds ends at the end of the season, but he has done well on loan at Leyton Orient in League One.
Sonny Perkins hasn’t exactly lived the dream at Leeds since joining from West Ham in the summer of 2022.
The 20-year-old has only made four appearances at Elland Road, and Daniel Farke made it clear that Perkins was not in his plans.
However, after returning to his boyhood club Leyton Orient on a season-long loan in June, his career may be on track once again.
Sonny Perkins’ form could persuade Daniel Farke to keep Leeds youngster.
The teenage forward has been consistently solid in League One, and he continued his good form on Wednesday with two assists in Leyton Orient’s 3-2 win against Bristol Rovers.
Perkins has been a big part of Orient’s success so far this season, with his loan club on a run of nine games unbeaten in all competitions, and consolidating a real play-off charge.
O’s boss Richie Wellens recognizes the fact that Perkins wouldn’t consent to a 2025 transfer, indicating there will be strong interest in the teenager if Leeds doesn’t tie him down to a new agreement.
Farke thought Perkins surplus to needs, but he may now be reconsidering his choice, as the youngster is still certainly full of potential.
Arsenal’s Declan Rice saw a ‘promising future’ in Perkins.
With the former Hammers player now producing at a level appropriate for his age, it’s little surprise that Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice praised Perkins so highly.
Perkins, who came through the West Ham youth, first played with Rice at the age of 17 after David Moyes gave him his senior debut in a Europa League victory over Rapid Vienna in 2021.
Following the victory, Rice wrote in an Instagram story, “The debutant!” Buzzing for you, brother @sonnyperkins. Your future is bright.”
Rice’s statements have been proven correct based on Perkins’ numbers this season, and given Leyton Orient’s form, you would expect these figures to rise.
Following a terrible loan experience at Oxford United, Perkins’ time at Leeds appeared to be coming to an end, thus he moved on loan with Orient this season.
Plenty to think for Farke with six months left on Perkins’ contract, but judging by Rice’s ability on the pitch, you’d trust his initiative.
