Leeds United supporters and players are still reeling after Friday night’s drama, when the Whites were on the verge of a great away triumph against Sunderland.
But this is Leeds, and with a few seconds of injury time remaining, Illan Meslier somehow fumbled an Alan Browne clearing that deflected slightly off Junior Firpo’s head.
An egregious error that has been widely discussed by fans and pundits since. Leeds defender Pascal Struijk blamed Meslier on the pitch, while Jermaine Beckford defended him.
However, it was a terrible misstep, one that Meslier will remember for years. One that will be seen often on social media, but more significantly, it cost Leeds two points.
Firpo stormed down the Sunderland tunnel shortly after the final whistle. The left-back was furious that he had not scored the winning goal, and Leeds had only earned a point.
Chris Sutton launches blistering criticism of Leeds player Junior Firpo.
There are two perspectives on Firpo’s fury. Some understand it, given that Meslier has been the subject of criticism for several seasons, and it demonstrates how much the left-back cares about Leeds.
Others believe Firpo should have joined his other Leeds teammates in consoling Meslier. Some have speculated Firpo was upset because Meslier was laughing and joking with Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris.
Chris Sutton is largely critical of Firpo. He told BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 on Saturday evening that Firpo is “not a good teammate” and has witnessed him make numerous mistakes over the years.
“Junior Firpo was really unhappy and stormed down the tunnel. Not a good teammate. I didn’t realise Firpo is [Paolo] Maldini. I’ve seen him make plenty of mistakes. I would’ve given the goalkeeper a hug.”
Illan Meslier still has five clean sheets in nine league games
Many have advocated for Meslier to be dropped in favor of Karl Darlow. But supporters must remember that the grass is not always greener, and Meslier’s performance this season has been quite impressive.
At this level, there are no finer goalkeepers with their feet, even if Meslier’s passing occasionally irritates Joe Rodon. Although his shot-stopping ability could be improved, he is an excellent option for Leeds.
Leeds are unlikely to find a superior goalkeeper while in the Championship, and if promoted, a replacement may be necessary. However, Daniel Farke has appointed him as vice captain, and he will continue to play goalkeeper.
