Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White was controversially sent off during the Reds’ draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.
Morgan Gibbs-White has spoken out about the red card he received during Nottingham Forest’s 2-2 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion last month.
The Reds’ No.10 was sent off by referee Rob Jones in the 83rd minute of the Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium. He had already been shown a yellow card for a foul on Georginio Rutter and was dismissed for a second bookable offence when he tackled Joao Pedro.
Pundits were divided over Jones’ choice to send Gibbs-White for an early bath. The majority of the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel thought the official made the wrong call, with a 3-2 split.
The Forest ace has acknowledged to playing on the edge. But he believes that not long ago, his tackle would have resulted in a different consequence.
BBC analyst Dion Dublin told Gibbs-White that he played the game in the same way as Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney. Dublin said that former Reds midfielder Keane had told him there was no purpose in playing otherwise.
Gibbs-White told Football Focus: “I feel the same way. Speaking of red cards, I received one the other day.
“This happens. It does.
“Six or seven years ago, you could nearly get away with those tackles, and everyone would call it a fantastic tackle. However, the game has evolved and players are adopting a new perspective.
“I had a second look at the game and thought, ‘Hmm, it’s a 50-50′. In the moment, I knew what I was about to do and how fast I was going. As I already stated, if I’m doing something, I’m completely devoted to it.
Jones also sent off Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler for reacting to the Gibbs-White altercation. The Football Association has since charged Nuno and Gibbs-White with allegedly acting in “an improper manner” and/or using “abusive and/or insulting words” towards officials.
Gibbs-White missed the Reds’ 1-0 loss to Fulham on Saturday due to a red card he received. He will be available again this weekend, as Nuno’s side travels to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Sunday (2pm kickoff).
