Salford City have accepted Leeds United’s six-figure proposal for Alex Cairns, according to Football Insider sources.
United have now achieved a final agreement to re-sign the 31-year-old goalkeeper, who has also agreed personal terms.
Cairns’ contract with Salford is slated to end in 2025, and with no new deal on the table, Leeds took advantage of the uncertainty to strike.
This comes after Football Insider exclusively disclosed on Sunday that Leeds had shown an interest in Cairns and were preparing a formal bid.
Leeds United agree deal to re-sign Alex Cairns from Salford City
Cairns came through the academy at Leeds and signed his first professional deal at Elland Road in 2011, but made just one senior appearance for the club.
After moving from Chesterfield to Rotherham, he eventually landed at Fleetwood, making 240 appearances for the club during their spell in League One.
He then made the move to Salford after a successful loan spell in 2022-23, going on to make 77 appearances and keep 12 clean sheets.
Cairns featured 51 times last season, keeping eight clean sheets as he saw his side narrowly avoid relegation from League Two.
Following Kristoffer Klaesson’s permanent transfer to Polish team Rakow Czestochowa on July 7, Leeds acted swiftly to find a replacement.
Leeds United As the team’s backup goalkeeper in lieu of Klaesson, Cairns will also assist the team in adhering to EFL registration regulations.
Cairns assisted Leeds in meeting the Championship’s requirement that all teams field at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man roster.
