According to insiders, the 49ers want to declare that film star Will Ferrell has purchased a “large” stake in Leeds United.
The newspaper stated on its website [5 May] that the Hollywood movie actor has purchased a share in the football club as the Whites prepare for the Championship play-offs, adding that he is likely to be a “major investor” at Elland Road and “pumped a large stake” into 49ers Enterprises.
Leeds are seeking to return to the Premier League after missing out on automatic promotion to Ipswich Town on the final day of the season.
A source close to Ferrell told The Sun: “It’s true, Will Ferrell owns a share of Leeds.”
“The 49ers will announce his involvement in the coming days, and he’s excited to sprinkle some stardust on the club. He enjoys soccer and has been particularly taken by the intensity of the English game.
“And his goal now is to get Leeds back where they belong: in the Premier League. Will and the 49ers see this as a real investment opportunity.
Will Ferrell to be announced as the new Leeds United investor.
Ferrell, clearly inspired by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s narrative at Wrexham, is poised to be introduced as a new Elland Road investor.
Ferrell is already a co-owner of Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer (MLS), demonstrating his prior involvement in the sport in America.
With the prospect of playing a role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League this season, this news will come as a welcome boost ahead of the Championship playoffs.
Of course, Daniel Farke and his players will be frustrated with how they missed out on automatic promotion, having lost four of their last six games of the season.
With a final-day victory over relegation-bound Huddersfield Town, Ipswich Town surpassed them for second place in the Championship table.
